First tries...

So I was kinda gone for awhile. I told myself I needed a freak from cooking and baking 'cause I'm getting fat from that. Not cool. But then, I can't resist baking a pie. It's my first try. I made a second one and gave it to my classmates too. I know the crust looks bad, but the taste isn't that bad. I copied Chuck's (Pushing Daisies) style in baking cheese into the crust. I'm not so much of a apple pie person, so the cheese made up for it.

Today is Chocolate Day. Coincidentally, I was planning to make a chocolate cake. This is my first time making a double layer cake with filling in the middle. It turned out well with the chocolate ganache icing. I added a tinge of Cointreau and used my mum's homemade cranberry jam in the middle. Also first time with alcohol baked into a cake.

I have a three week semester break from school. I don't know how I did for my exams yet but I'm spending the holidays in Singapore. Visiting old friends and acquintances made my days great so far. Anyhow, I met up with one of my baker friend and she decided to make bread pudding together. So, this is the result.

I made some cupcakes after my final exams. I've been waiting for my exams to finish quickly so I could try out Ina Garten's red velvet cupcake recipe. They're absolutely wonderful. My mum loves it too. I made some changes so it's not too sweet and the texture is just right for the frosting. I lessen 3 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar to 2 cups and 12 tablespoon butter to 6 tablespoon for the frosting. I love that it's just the right shade of red and it doesn't look too scary to eat.

I made muffins today and it was kinda failed. My sister used to make this when we lived in Singapore and she got the recipe from here. I remembered she had a hard time making these the first time too. The jam just oozed out and made a hole in the muffin. What a disappointment. But without the hole on the bottom, it still taste pretty good. I need to ask her how did she manage to loose the hole someday.

I got a pot of beginner's pack of "thyme" plant. It contains a pot, soil, fertilizer and thyme seeds. Thought I'll try to plan something organic for my cooking. Hope it actually grows though. I also have sage and some hot chili seeds I haven't plant. I'll get to that soon.

Penang is what they call food heaven of Malaysia. I used to agree to that, but things has changed now. Food is now only catering to tourists and tourists' currency. Sad, but true. Anyways, I made Maggi Goreng. Something the locals love and I'm pretty good at cooking it. Those who tried it will agree with me :)

Been two days since I last cooked something. Today, I made omelette for breakfast. Added cherry tomatoes, green peppers, carrots, sausages, onions, garlic, Tabasco sauce, cinnamon powder, salt and pepper to taste. I bought this hot sauce yesterday and tried it on the omelette too. It's pretty good. I could now use it for other cooking too.

I started my cooking today with Guy Fieri's bacon and tomato pasta. It's very easy and very good. Not the typical tomato or cream sauce which I'm pretty sick of nowadays.

Then, I've decided to bake cookies again. I wanted to try the cookie cutters I got from Daiso recently. I found the recipe off allrecipes.com and there wasn't a lot of choice for cut-out cookie recipes so I chose the one with peanut butter in it. It taste alright but nothing special to me. My mum likes it, but she likes almost anything she didn't make.

As for dinner, I made eggplant and parmesan sandwich. I missed all the wonderful Halloween parties this Saturday but I made up with cooking. It's the only hobby I have since moving back here and having access to three different food channels is just crazy. I feel like cooking all the time.

So, I made a point today to bake some cookies. I promised my classmate that I'll bring some chocolate chip cookies on Monday since she's a willing "test subject". I made a portion of plain chocolate chip cookies for school and another portion for home which are bacon chocolate chip cookies. I've always wanted to try this recipe. I love bacon! I wanted to make bacon chocolate cupcakes but since I did cupcakes last few weeks, I thought cookies would do for now.

Food diary starts now...

Hi blog. It's been awhile since I have posted anything here. One being I have puresinner and the other is twitter. Most rants and music comments go there. So, why am I suddenly back here again? I'm going to start blogging about food. After being back to my hometown, I have the best access to a kitchen and my mother can't really cook anything other than Asian cuisines. I've been baking and grilling and it's been really fun for me. In fact, it's the only hobby I can have in this neighborhood I live in. I know I'm no chef or even a cook and definitely have no culinary skills, but this is just going to be my food diary :)

Yesterday, I had an attempt on Cleveland's Polish Boy. I first saw it on Food Network where chef Michael Symon featured it as the best food he ever ate from his hometown. It's like a hotdog but topped with coleslaw, fries and barbecue and/or hot sauce. Oh my god, it's totally my type of junk food. I know it won't be authentic, but I just like to try it myself. I used barbecue sauce, Tabasco's habanero and pepper sauce, apricot jam and a little red wine just for kicks. I'm experimenting with sauces at the moment. So, I tend to add just anything I think could go well together. Turned out pretty well for myself and my mum said she likes it too.

Polish Boy

Today, I made lamb steak for dinner. I make it quite often when I get my groceries from Tesco (Sungai Dua, Penang). This time I made the sauce a little different. Like I said, I'm still experimenting with sauces. I used barbecue sauce (yes, again), apple cider vinegar, apple juice and red wine. Now I really don't like drinking alcohol (really) but I love using it for cooking. It's just like salt and pepper but with more flavor. So it turned out alright for me but a little on the sour side. Maybe no vinegar next time since the barbecue said is pretty sour.

I made a mental note to get my hands on Cointreau (or any triple sec) and Absinthe. In the future, I'm going to try to make chocolate cranberry cake and chocolate truffles with those liquor.

Three million people were affected by the Haiti earthquake on January 12th early this year. The tragic that caused so many Haitians to loose their family and homes still needs aid to restore their homecountry. Metal For A Cause was a mission to help relief the lost hope amongst other humanitarian aids.

Founder of Metal Horde, Robin Li tells us what you should do when everything fails:

8flo: What is Metal Horde and your position in it?

"Metal Horde is a non-profit group started out on Facebook in March 2009. The position that I have suits to my capability that can take Metal Horde to the next level. Promoting the local metal bands to the masses across the globe isn't impossible considering how technology improvises each year, paving ways to connect and reach out to people of similar interest across the globe. I won't consider myself the leader of the pack because i believe each one in the team deserves to take leads/make decisions in various situations. Consisting of Ganesh, Tina, Sonia and new recruited member, Kian Yong, I've assembled a team that can energise their strengths to help Metal Horde.

8flo: Why Haiti and Blackhole212?

"We all know the earthquake that happened in Haiti back in January. And it is a tragedy, considering ourselves fortunate to be in a country far from Natural disasters.
And I've always wanted to organise a gig, but not just a gig, but bringing something unique to the table. This was the opportunity for Metal Horde to do one that not only benefit the bands but also, the people in Haiti.
Venue wise, we've overlook Blackhole for Art House and Substation. But due to the schedules and cost, we've decided to scrap it and tell ourselves, "Blackhole 212. A place for gigs for the masses. Why not?" It being affordable for students like us, we know we will earn profits for the donation to Haiti easily."

8flo: What do you think of the feedback you received from the bands you invited to play "Metal for a Cause"?

"The roster's good. And i'm glad the bands are willing to play.
It was an opportunity that i would love to give to bands like Age of Sinfonia, Enstrung, Stillborn, Xanadoo, Helmskey to show what they have in store for us.
And without a doubt, they impressed.
Also to play alongside bands like Bhelliom and Meza Virs, definitely sharing the stage with them is something significant."

8flo: What is your opinion on the Singapore metal scene?

"The 'scene' is rather subjective these days. Lots of politics, being a victim of one myself.
But music wise, there are many bands starting out and winning over new listeners of the genre. Have you seen Warsaw at Mass Ritual 2? Now that's one potential band that I'll be keeping tabs.
What i do hope to see is UNITY. And i believe everyone of us would like to see that."

8flo: What's in store for Metal Horde in the near future?

"Metal Horde... hmm.. Lets just say, we're looking to spring another surprise. Who doesn't like surprises? Lets just keep it low profile."

8flo: Any advice for readers out there looking for gigs to organise?

"It was my first gig, organising with a team. And definitely you feel the pressure of pulling off a show. But one thing is, be calm and composed. If you face doubters, that's part of it. Just brush it off and do your thing. Don't fall to the words of condemnation. If you need support, there's plenty out there."

SINGAPORE WRITER'S FESTIVAL was held at The Art's House from October 24th to November 1st. I, of course was not there for a whole week. Just a day. Mainly because I was only there to see Amanda Palmer. What does an author's event got to do with Amanda Fucking Palmer? The photobook of course.

The stalking begun at the Singapore Changi Airport. I was not alone. Actually, it was Sailesh's idea. I dragged along Iva and he brought Aries. I made sure I was fully equipped upon their arrival. This I have to thank Fendi for. He got me CDs from The Dresden Dolls and Amanda's solo. He is such a sweetheart. Iva reminded me to bring along her novel by Neil Gaiman. Neil himself, posted the details to their arrival on Twitter. So we knew he was totally cool about it.

The event organiser staffs were probably already there when we got there. They were really nice people too. They spotted us as Neil and Amanda fans easily with our books and CDs at hand. One of the lovely lady actually gave us an extra ticket to Neil's Sunday graphic novel panel. I immediately told Sailesh to take it and thank the lady. I knew he wanted it so bad and he deserves it. He is after all the only one amongst us with The Sandman Absolute Edition. We didn't have to wait long unlike the arrival of Nine Inch Nails back in August. When they came out of the glass door, two groups of fans swarm the two. The other group of fans actually came all the way from Malaysia to see Amanda. They have my respect. Oh I almost forgot, our friend Aries, bought Amanda kaya toast and local coffee. In the end, she left out coffee 'cause she spilt a little and looked quite messy. We took pictures and sign some stuff. Amanda looked a little shock holding her CDs asking "Where did you get these?", knowing Singapore wouldn't carry them. I simply said "Online". Here's the whole airport story caught on video:

"Who Killed Amanda Palmer" consists of photographs of Amanda herself dead. Some dated about a decade ago. She has quite a hobby. Neil Gaiman, the writer behind the stories told in her book tells tales like you all knew from Stardust to Coraline, and Sandman to The Graveyard Book. The couple's panel discussion lasted about an hour on Halloween afternoon. Autograph session began after that and about 500 people with and without tickets to the festival came. The lord of fantasy and the lady cabaret did not stop there. That same night, Amanda Fucking Palmer performed for us for the very first time in Singapore. The Graveyard Party was what its called and despite the thunderstorm outside, nothing could stop Amanda and disappoint her fans. The show was shifted from the front lawn to the Chambers inside.

Amanda made an entrance from the back of the crowd with her usual ukulele song, Creep:

The show was short that night. Maybe because she wanted to save it for the next night. Another autograph and photo session again with everyone dressed for Halloween. She even wrote a new song on ukulele that took only two hours for her fans here. God help us find it on YouTube someday. Other songs I remember played that night was Oasis, Coin-operated Boy, I Google You, Dear Old House That I Grew Up In and of course Ampersand:

Last day of Amanda Fucking Palmer and I was beginning to feel a bit sad, but it was also the night we have been waiting for. She performed at Stereolab, somewhere I have never been to but a club venue. Merchandise was sold and I bought her DVD for $30 which I got it signed later, again. She started the song with Missed Me, and followed by requests. It was way too last minute and so she probably thought better not to plan and let the fans decide. I got to say, seeing Ampersand being played twice in two nights really made my week. I love that song live. Also not to mention, Neil even did a reading. He read one of what Amanda did at the Arts House. I'm sorry Amanda, but I got to say Neil can do it better. But I guess we all already know that. Here's proof:

Fort Canning Park, SINGAPORE (10th August) - I didn't have much sleep the nights before. Went to the venue early in the morning to camp out. Raining and later the hot sun on my back. Ate only a few bites and suffered headaches and gastric pain for this show. Nonetheless it was so fucking worth it.
I went to the show with my closest friends from Singapore and few of the biggest Nine Inch Nails fans I have ever met. Most of us got "Trent dived" with his sweat and DNA left on us. I only wish I licked him when I have the chance. Oh well. Almost everyone I know from Singapore were there. People I know from the Despair Faction, Renegades, SDAM, Dualtone and everyone else I know from the music scene. It feels very nice to see all the people I know together in the same place.

The day before, we waited at the airport for the band to arrive. Iva, Ænimic and I were very late from the band rehearsal. We rushed there like crazy. In the end, we made it. We said our hellos to every band and Robin Finck was really nice to stick around to take pictures and sign autographs for us. I got my limited edition The Slip signed. It would only fit to have Robin sign that 'cause his name is in it.

Merchandise was very disappointing. All T-shirts were priced at SGD$40. The quality is horrible. The shirts look like those very thick common ones you see everyday and apparently the Target label is still attached to it. How low can you get right? Despite the lamesness, I had to get the tour date tee. It is a must. You can't get it anywhere else.

Okay, I'm going to stop complaining. I had fun. The show was incredibly awesome. There were so many songs played that was always my dream to hear live. Terrible Lie, La Mer, The Frail, The Fragile, Non-Entity, The Downward Spiral, Reptile, Hurt, I'm Afraid of Americans etc. They were all great. Trent sang so perfectly. It almost feels like I'm watching an edited Blu Ray DVD! I have no other complains about the show except for him giving such a short speech. 20 years man. How can there be nothing to talk about? I don't get it. And this is the end too.

...in everett, washington requires the immediate assistance of anyone willing to help.

animal rescue workers in everett, raided puppy mills and saved over 600 dogs from incredibly inhumane conditions. many of them abused, malnourished and living in their own feces. several hundred of the dogs (now living in kennels at the everett animal services shelter) are expecting pups, which unfortunately raises a whole other issue.

the everett animal services director, bud wessman, expects at least one litter per day from each of the rescued dogs for months to come...raising the toll to over 1500 homeless dogs and puppies in need of care and companionship.

by reaching out to help in any way possible, you can give the heroic rescue of these dogs the happy ending that it deserves.

Our very first involvement in stage productions! We are the Official Stylist for ‘The Vaginal Monologues’ (by Eve Ensler), brought to you by Zebra Crossing Production, with Loretta Chen as the Artistic/Stage Director.

The Vagina Monologues is made up of a varying number of monologues read by a varying number of women. Every monologue somehow relates to the vagina, be it through sex, love, rape, menstruation, mutilation, masturbation, birth, orgasm, the variety of names for the vagina, or simply as a physical aspect of the body. A recurring theme throughout the piece is the vagina as a tool of female empowerment, and the ultimate embodiment of individuality.

The play runs from 1 October to 12 October 2008 (except on Mondays) at Drama Centre Theatre (National Library, Level 3).
Tuesdays to Saturdays – 8 pm.
Sundays – 3 pm and 8 pm.

(B) Questions on Série Expert Hair Treatment from L'Oréal Professionnel

There have been some questions regarding the new Série Expert Hair Treatment from L'Oréal Professionnel.

Q: What’s the difference between Série Expert Hair Treatment from L'Oréal Professionnel and a “regular” hair protein treatment?

A: Normal treatment creams used in “regular” hair protein treatment contain molecules that are much larger, compared to the molecules found in Série Expert Hair Treatment creams.

Molecules in Série Expert Hair Treatment creams are much smaller because the molecules have been processed to “shrink in size”. Thus, normal treatment creams do not penetrate as deeply as Série Expert Hair Treatment creams.

NGEE ANN CITY, 5th April - I had to work 'till 9:30PM. Earlier that day, I was in the bus from Penang. I didn't have enough rest. But my ex-colleagues called me from work telling me, there was a hair show at Orchard Road. They have the tickets for me. Booyah! Free pass to the show. Me, to a hair show? This is the very first time.

Sadly, I have to rush after work 'cause it starts at 10PM. Damn. So I took the 190 bus from my workplace. Fortunately, I reach in time for the line. I dressed like an idiot. T-shirt and jeans. I wasn't vain enough for that night. Too bad.

Show was great. It wasn't very long. But it was okay 'cause I couldn't wait to get to M.O.S. on a Saturday night for free! Yup. Complimentary pass to the club from the hair show's pass. Great isn't it?
They even took a picture of us. I always look so duh. Oh well. Actually, I was pretty excited that night 'cause earlier that day I found out Robin Finck has returned to Nine Inch Nails. So lets just say the clubbing is to celebrate his return. I threw a party for him. Oh yes I did.

I'm home, safe in Singapore now. No riot (a prediction thought to be caused by the election). Bleeding Through was just fucking great. So nice and humble. Great performance. Took a photo and shook hands with Marta and only shook hands with Brian. Missed Brandan. So sad.

Amir, my man! Took so good care of me the whole time. He waited for me cause I don't want to go on Saturday and he had to suffer rushing to the show with me on Sunday. I am so thankful to have such a good friend. Bless him!

Update:
Ruums Club (Kuala Lumpur), 9th March: Travelling from Singapore to KL. It was a great adventure. My friend Amir and I took the 10am bus from Larkin and reached Puduraya at around 2:45pm. Before that, we meet up at Kranji MRT and took the 170 bus to Johor. I thought we were late for the show, but soundcheck wasn't even done when we reach the venue at 3:30pm. This is a very different experience for me to meet such different people. The kids are my age or older. I am the kid but not them! Well, at least they don't look like teens. I got alot of stares. I still wonder why.

I got to the merch table, got my RM35 tour t-shirt made by a local company. It looks okay, but not in the right size. It's huge even if it's size S. It's for guys. Obviously.

The first opening band started just when I enter the club. The place is quite huge. I like how they set up the place. Reminds me of DXO and Far East Square combined together but better. I'm so proud of being Malaysian. We actually have good gig venues.

So, Amir was with his Singapore group of friends. Four Sides. He didnn't wanna go in yet. So, I hung out with Daxter, Nina and their friends. My KL online friends. Really nice kids from the scene. Quite decent if you asked me. I guess we're not really the aggressive type.

We all sat down at the side where they serve drinks and stuff. We watched the opening acts Restraint, Arheum Revert, Dashow and Have A Nice Death, all from Malaysia before we head out to the crowd and see Four Sides from Singapore to warm up abit.

All the bands were good. First time seeing local Malaysian bands perform. I'm proud of what they do.

They crew was all over the stage. So was the crowd. They kept going onstage and even took the mic right out of Brandan's hand. You can see it in the video I recorded. It was pretty funny, yet kind of rude. Not to mention hanging around Marta while she's performing. Give the chick some space will ya?

Nonetheless, it was a totally good show. It was shorter than I thought. About an hour only. They didn't play "Line In The Sand". I don't think they even perform that before. But it was okay. Totally worth it.

Marta is such a darling. A beauty with a heart. I look so ridiculous in the above photo. I have to think 1,000 times whether I should post it and send it out to my two friends or not.

Dear friends, I hope you can make it to Deafcon X this coming Saturday (23rd February). It has been months since I last attended a Deafcon gig. This time, I had to skip work, taking an MC so I could meet my friends again. I really miss those days. Please try to make it to DXO on that day. It will mean a lot to me. Remember to say hello. Bleeding Through Live In KL!

Help me, I'm in hell. It's like I'm happy, yet I'm sad. You see, Bleeding Through are going to perform in Kuala Lumpur on the 9th of March. So, I'm suppose to go, "Holy shit! Bleeding Though! Yay! I'm going to buy tickets!". But then, KL? 9th March is a Sunday. I have work and KL isn't near. I'm so fucked.

Tomorrow I will try to ask my manager if I can get that Sunday off. I probably won't be staying. So, it's just a day of all hell.

Any of you Bleeding Through fans from Singapore wanna tag along with me to KL? I have friends there with a place to stay. Free of charge. Seriously, someone gotta come with me.

Yi Ting Showed me this from Shannon's MySpace. Seems like Davey likes going back to the same stylist. I don't mind much of Shannon's work. It's all really good. Just not a fan of the blonde highlights. Davey changed his eyebrows too. This one's really nice. I like this look alot. Stubbles, definite hunk.

Watched Sweeney Todd. Not the best Burton work. But worth a watch. Ending's a little sad.

Really tired now. Two weeks work with no off days. I need my Chinese New Year holiday now. Oh and my parents are coming in a few hours from Penang. They're in the bus now.

Random thoughts throughout the month:

More than a week ago, I went to Causeway Point to check out the TVB Stars organised by StarHub. I saw Bobby Au-Yong, Wong Hei, Charmaine Seah etc. I remember I used to watch them act in those Hong Kong Soap Operas with my mum.

I noticed Channel 5 used Blaqk Audio's "Snuff On Digital" for their new series, Dirt's advertisement.

I like listening to the Class 95 radio station at work. Duran Duran, Roxette, Soft Cell, Erasure and Eurythmics are amongst the bands that are just so cool to listen to. I hate it when they play the 90's boybands. Gives me the nerves.

I finally found my pink mascara. I love that brand. Sephora. It has so many cool products. Thanks to my friend, Alvin for introducing me to it. I think I wanna get the glitters soon. Someone need to introduce me a white powder foundation. 'Cause I don't use beige or nude colours.

Sweeney Todd is coming out this 31st. I might try to go watch after work. I don't have off days anymore before Chinese New Year. So, it's kind of hard for me to find time.

Billy Howerdel's solo project, Ashes Divide is sounding great. I can hear it's him in his songs. It's his guitar style.

I shopped again. Damn. I'm spending too much money this month. But well, it was cheap. I got special treatment from a friend from a record store. I got the AFI album for SGD$18 and the NIN for SGD$22.50. Discount!

Entrance the band. Yes, that is the name of the band. Guy Blakeslee, Derek James and the infamous Paz Lenchantin (of A Perfect Circle and Zwan). I just receive their third album, Prayer of Death in the mail two days ago. Now, it's playing in my Sony Ericsson Walkman and iTunes (yes I use iTunes, cause I'm an iDiot) very often.
I'd like to think I am the only person in Singapore (and Malaysia most likely) to have this album. I am very proud of it. This is a masterpiece in my opinion. Some people tend to think Guy can't sing or play an instrument. I like to think otherwise. So sue me.

I know that it's because of Paz I know this band, but I know a good band when I hear it. I have seen a few bootlegs on YouTube. Most of them shot by Maximilla Lukacs. I am truly amazed by how this band sound like. Not to mention the energy. You just have to see it to understand. Words can't describe how intense they are.
